An employee always has a choice, whether to put in his efforts towards work or not to. What drives a team member? Expectancy Theory is a beautiful theory which reveals the secret.
There are 3 levels that drives his efforts . 1st level is, only when the team member believes his effort is going to reach a desired performance, he is going to take efforts. 2nd level if he thinks that his desired performance is going to yield a reward or recognition and the 3rd level is if the reward or the recognition is valuable to him. The value of the reward is based on his own needs, goals and values.
As a lead or a manager, ensure that your team member’s job is related to his capability, capacity and interest, also help to build his confidence and let the goal always be a SMART goal. Ensure that there is a reward or a recognition and that matches with his needs and values.
